The Power of Travel

What is the KILROY way?

The KILROY Way is our framework for creating truly immersive and remarkable travel experiences you will remember for the rest of your life. We have carefully curated our itineraries based on a select few so-called key ingredients to make sure you can easily identify those experiences that are truly transformative and give you the most bang for your buck! On each of our itineraries, you will see a score that aligns with the KILROY Way. This makes it easier for you to compare how the trips differ from each other and choose an option that fits you best. The higher the itinerary scores, the more aligned it is with the KILROY way.

We would like to contribute to a tourism industry where we travel with more intent, participating in longer, more immersive trips.

1. Go Local

Local experiences allow you to become active participants in a community or destination – instead of just spectators. Going local is about seeking out immersive experiences that provide insight into culture and the people who call the destination home. Choose a local accommodation option like a homestay, overnight in a local village, or seek out hostels that are locally owned and operated. Participate in activities led by community members to experience a destination in a unique way and gain historical and cultural insight, opt for meals at those mom-and-pop shops and take advantage of local transportation options.

2. Go Slow

While going slow is often the more sustainable option in regards to transportation, slowing down your travels can enrich your overall experience. Your transportation choices throughout your journey can get you closer to the cultures you visit, something you would simply miss out on when choosing a short-haul flight to get you from A to B. Opt for using public transport, trains, chicken buses, the list goes on - and get a real feel for your destination while experiencing things you wouldn't otherwise. Slowing down your travels is a deliberate choice to make room for less. These are the moments that authentic encounters will present themselves to you, and where the unknown will lead to the unexpected highlights of your trip.

3. Personal growth

Travel poses the ultimate opportunity to take you out of your comfort zone and introduce you to new cultures, ideas, and experiences. In these moments, you're more open to differentiation perspectives and stepping out of your comfort zone which leads to increased self-awareness and personal growth. Often, travelers return home and are changed by the experiences they've had abroad. Examples could be connecting with "strangers," learning a new language, trying new things you've never tried before. Once you return from your trip, reflect on all the memories that will make a different you.

4. Have Fun

Travel is an exciting and thrilling experience that can open doors to a new world. While an adventure abroad can be challenging, it can also be filled with wonder and most of all fun! Whether that's attending a cooking class, bungee jumping, or partying the night away under the stars, being open for exploration curiosity and spontaneity enhance any adventure and make your experience a trip of a lifetime!

5. Sustainability

KILROY is on a journey. We acknowledge our responsibility to make the world a better place through travel. Being responsible is more than just skipping the flights. It's as much about making sure the money stays in the local communities, protecting and respecting the places we visit, preventing over touristed cities, and securing animal welfare. It’s also about informing KILROY travelers on how their actions impact the planet and providing them with the knowledge to make more informed choices on their journey.

While we are in no way perfect, we are striving for a better tomorrow. We believe that small intentional choices can make a difference and that can truly leave a transformative impact on the places we visit, the people we encounter, and for the living things that share the planet we call home.
